Dakimakura pillows, Yay or Nay?

Post by MonjaElisa on Sat May 09, 2015 8:16 pm

so... yea.. people have separate views about it... dakimakura or aka\\ hugging pillows are fullsized pillows... usually 50\150 cm but you can get costumized or in other sizes... there is no set size... the overall concept is for you to have the full body image of your favorite anime guys or girls...

there are dressed ones for fandom.... and there are more naughty ones for the bedroom often aimed more towards the male audience.... I've seen through this discussions several times before....

People say they wont date somebody with a hugging pillow cause its creepy.... or, wierd.... personally Im the kind that wants one myself so idc xD

what are your opinions about hugging pillows?

Would you buy it? would you date it?

I don't... see the point to them personally. Same with boob mats... I don't get it.

personally I would never buy one. Its just... too weird for me.
I do understand why some would want one whether it to fill that empty hole in their heart or for dirty purposes.

If a girl I date has one; meh. That's their business. Not mine. I don't care.

Nah...I'll pass. I prefer a real person. If I'm going to go that far, I'll just date somebody.

I don't see the harm in it, it's just a pillow, and they are comfortable.

The pillow itself ain't really the issue here...

I have one and I like it, so i say go for it! I like the designs and find they really fit nicely with my other anime collectibles. It sits on my bed and really doesn't do anything, nor do I even hug it tbh xD

If I dated anyone who was so shallow as to dislike me because of a pillow I owned, they wouldn't be worth my time. To me, taking issue with someone else's harmless likes/dislikes is really low, even for humans :p Now, when you go crazy and smother them, take them out in public, talk to them, or take them on dates... that's where the issues should be taken. Otherwise, really, it's just a pillow, get over it xD

Well, yeah, but just because someone owns one doesn't mean they use it for...you know... ¬ ¬

GWIDHW's GUIDE TO OWNING DAKIMAKURA

When owning a dakimakura, one must not be ashamed to display the piece within one's home, apartment, or personal space. Just as a prized collection of antiques, the dakimakura has aesthetic appeal to those who enjoy the art style. If one neither enjoys the style, nor do they appreciate it, they need not employ it in their personal space. This said, one must not force the usage or keeping of dakimakura onto those without.

The purpose of a dakimakura is to hug the pillow, so as to achieve a comfortable sleeping position. Until one tries this, one is unable to determine whether or not this is a valuable experience. A dakimakura itself serves only this purpose.

A proper example of usage is as such:

Note the lack of character pillow case over the dakimakura - without, it looks like a boring, large, white pillow with which you can hug. Character pillow cases give character, dimension, and aesthetic appeal to dakimakura, making them more intrinsically pleasing, and more prone to embracing.

An proper example of a dakimakura in the home; not being used:

Of course, in the above example, the individual's dakimakura adds to their collection as a whole and accents the rest of the bed. Bed sheets, throws, and blankets fall into the same respect as dakimakura, although usage does vary.

This guide does not discuss bed sheets, blankets, or throws in any further detail.

Of course, dakimakura have garnered a bad reputation as having been for strictly otaku, nerds, or losers who *get off* to the character on the casing. Of course, one is ignorant to assume this is universal, just as one is ignorant to assume dakimakura are suitable for only one gender or the other.

An example of people who give dakimakura a bad name:

Although amusing, and taken for such a purpose (the author hopes), this gentleman shows society what dakimakura users are not like as a whole, and instills the negative connotation that comes with dakimakura ownership and usage.

A great deal of dakimakura owners find appeal in the interchangeability of the character cases and designs, and appeal in the function of said dakimakura. Although, as mentioned previously, certain owners give the whole of dakimakura owners' a bad name.

Examples of people furthering the negative connotations of dakimakura ownership:

Although the above examples are deemed pathetic, please be aware that not all ownership exudes a pathetic air.

An example of positively using a dakimakura (no character pillow case):

Dakimakura do not only come in one size (50x150), but rather in multiple sizes, being larger, taller, thinner, or smaller in size. Their functions and purpose vary depending on the size.

An example of a different size, used in an aesthetically pleasing fashion:

As can be seen, usage and ownership of dakimakura is not inherently negative, nor should it be viewed as such. If one is the proud owner of a dakimakura for either the function or aesthetic appeal, one need not be ashamed, as one's purpose of ownership varies from that of other's.

Be like this man, garner negativity:

Don't be ashamed to be like this lovely young gal:

Of course, to reiterate, dakimakura are not solely to be used by only one gender or the other. They can be enjoyed by any and all people who find them appealing; albeit to varying degrees.

Examples of varying degrees:
(Arguably positive, possibly erotic enjoyment)

(Getting ready for action!)

(What is this I don't even?!)

(Proper usage)

Go ahead, embrace your dakimakura's in the privacy of your own home! Just remember, if you take them outside or in public, you run the risk of negatively projecting a false image onto all dakimakura owner's, which may or may not be the case.

The ignorant masses can tell no difference, and stereotyping based on extremes is commonplace. If you or someone you know owns a dakimakura, don't judge or heckle before you understand their situation. There are many appeals to owning a dakimakura, as stated, and they are not just for pervert (hentai) otaku.

All said, if you find yourself the owner of a dakimakura... please, just..don't lose your grip on reality:
