Guilty Pleasures Empty Guilty Pleasures

Post by Bryan Dacote Mon Jun 01, 2015 6:10 pm

Okay we all know there is PLENTY of awful games out there that are completely hated by all gamers and if you so much as mention you like them you are hated as well for tolerating such crap.

I am one of those people who will enjoy a game because of my own personal taste despite the status quo.

So what game is your guilty pleasure?

Mine is Sonic The Hedgehog or better known as Sonic 06. It was the launch title for both the Xbox 360 and PS3 back in the day. I've yet to complete the PS3 version but I've played and beaten the 360 version several times. And I still occasionally play it to this day. Am I ashamed of it? No. Sonic Adventure 1 is my favorite SOnic game mostly since it had an adventure field so I could explore. Despite how much more... boring Sonic 06's was since there was next to no side missions or they were overly tedious due to loading screens I still enjoyed how it brought that feature back. I was disapointed how SA2 didn't have an adventure field.
Sonic Unleashed (AKA Sonic World Adventure) also had a adventure field but it wasn't as expansive as Sonic 06's was.
The Sonic and Shadow stages were reasonably fun to me (I was one of those people who enjoyed the mach speed parts of Sonic's levels) I didn't much care for Silver's levels due to length and tediousness.
Story was actually fairly complicated and involved a lot of time travel. People say there's plot holes every where. I wouldn't say everywhere since I don't think they thought of what connected and what didn't in the story. However I am one of those people who HATE that one scene near the end. You KNOW the scene! The ending itself I had no problem with. Its kinda normal in some cases of time travel. I'd more pissed if it was all a dream. Because at least in a multiverse sense all the trouble you went through still technically happened but on a separate timeline.
I like Mephiles as a villain (since he did one thing no one else could do: kill Sonic) and he still is one of my favorite Sonic Villains. Blaze and Silver despite their bad gameplay were characters I enjoyed. I don't mind the redesign on Eggman either.
I understand the hate on the game. But I can't hate on it myself since I oddly enjoyed it.

Starfox Adventures - tbh I've only beaten this one maybe two or three times. I am a starfox fan. Starfox 64 is still a game that is close to my heart. Adventures was like Sonic Adventure; very different for the Starfox series. (odd of the similarities isn't it? Anthamofic animals, linear gameplay being broken by an adventure game)
I can't go into as much detail on why I liked Starfox Adventures in comparison to the other games in the series. I guess just because I enjoy early adventure games and this felt like a nice mix of a Rare game with Zelda but with Starfox.

Tales of Vesperia - I'm a fan of the Tales of series. And this one (the only Tales game on the 360) has gotten more flak in comparison to other titles such as Symphonia, Abyss and Graces. I'm not sure why since the game is similar to the others except the story is pretty linear and that there isn't as many side missions. Maybe also that the game can be at times very easy and rather short in comparison.
I guess I enjoyed some of the weird glitches that could be exploited such as the infamous Grade Farming. I enjoyed ALL of the characters. (Repede, Yuri, Judith and Rita are definitely my favorite Tales of characters) (I ship Yuri and Judith SO HARD) and in a way I didn't mind that it was kinda short and easy because it meant I could just enjoy the story instead of dealing with annoying tedious puzzles (looking at you Symphonia)

Duke Nukem Forever - I haven't played much of this one let alone beat it. But what I have played; I've enjoyed. I tried playing Duke Nukem 3D after trying out Forever and well... I like how much different Forever is than 3D. 3D just felt like a knock off of Doom for me. And this game is just downright hilarious.

Metroid Other M - I haven't beaten this one either and I was going blindly in since I never got into the other entries into the series. I HAVE Super Metroid and the Prime trilogy and tried them a little but Other M cought me. I didn't give much a damn to the story. It just didn't hold me but I at least was paying attention but I enjoyed the gameplay. I do need to beat it still though.

Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - I don't need to say much for this one. I enjoyed how different and darker it is to not just the other Zelda titles but other games PERIOD. Back when it came out and for many years (for about 10 I think) Majora's Mask was highly disliked by not just the Zelda fan community but by gamers everywhere. I felt like after OoT3D people were just romanticising the game with nostalgia. Most of those people hadn't played the game in years. And after MM3D came out I felt like the same distaste most people had with it back in 2000 came back just for being different. I have beaten this game at least once per year every year since I first beaten it in about 2004-05. This game does not bore me. I love the 3 day mechanic. It challenges me every time.

Megaman Legends - Most people when they think of Megaman they think of Classic Megaman or Megaman X. Basically the 2D entries which is about 90% of the series. The short lived MML series was its only 3D entries. (3 in total not counting the mobile games that were released in Japan only and the demo of MML3 that was never released)
Most people disliked the game's clunky controls and the fact it was in 3D. And maybe even for some; the more complicated story. Well I say; screw you.
My first Megaman game was MM2. Wanna know how many times I've beaten that one without cheating? None. I generally dislike most of the 2D entries. Only one I enjoyed was ZX for the DS. I loved the story to Legends 1. I loved the gameplay and sense of adventure. The challenge and even the RPG elements. The game sports awesome music with good VA work.
Hell I've gone out and boughten the Japanese only PSP versions of MML1 and 2. I've BEATEN the first entry in Japanese even though I can't read Japanese not once but TWICE. I've loved this game and it rivals Majora's Mask as my all time favorite game of all time. (funny since the abreviation for both is MM. Also this one is generally disliked for the same reason as SOnic Adventure and Starfox Adventures)

I'm totally on board with Duke Nukem Forever. I've beaten it, twice, and it's a fun game Smile

It was bashed so horridly due to it's tardiness in release, and the fact that it "didn't live up to the hype" and that it was "a complete letdown". Some people even accused it of feeling "outdated" in terms of what it is, and what age it came out in. But to these comments I say:

Have you ever even played another Duke Nukem game? Have you ever even beaten this one?
If not, your opinion is a waste of time Smile

As someone who has played through, and completed, Duke Nukem on a variety of platforms, versions, releases, etc., I can say, with all honesty, that it's a great DUKE NUKEM game. Maybe not a great 'COD' game, or an amazing "FPS" game, but, if you think a game like Duke Nukem 3D (as outdated as it is) is awesome, then you can't possibly hate on Duke Nukem Forever.

This game isn't a masterpiece, but it sure as hell isn't a bad game by any stretch of the imagination. People only love to hate. Even if it's only based on mere excuses and not valid reasons. Of course, this game isn't without flaw, or detriment, but it's definitely worth the purchase price for one who likes FPS games in general, or the Duke Nukem franchise.

...I rant, because I get annoyed xD

I agree with you there. RAGE got similar hate on it because it wasn't another COD. I LOVED RAGE. It was awesome I'm surprised I forgot to put it on this list.
I've beaten RAGE so many times within the 4 years since it came out. I own it on PC, 360 and PS3 and beaten it on each console. (also own the DLC for each one) I loved the RPG element and the different ammo types and even the racing. Excellent game.

I think another reason no one liked it was it wasn't another Fallout 3/New Vegas or Borderlands. I haven't played Borderlands but I have Fallout 3. The only 2 things Fallout and RAGE have in common is the first person shooter genre (and its not the main focus of Fallout) and the setting. The two games are very different. RAGE is indeed more linear but I can't blame ID software for that. All of their games are mostly linear and not all that long. Fallout 3 is a massive game and it takes a long time to beat.

The game on PC had a bad launch due to bugs but I blame Bethesda for that because they wanted ID to switch from doing PC games to Console. Consoles are usually pretty behind in terms of tech when compared to PC. And I remember a day later after the launch ID software had the initial bug fixed. Within a few weeks they fixed even more of the issues. The game technically was beyond its time - especially graphically. The game in its raw files was about 20 TBs! Doom 3 was also ahead of its time as well.

....

I had the same sort of thing with Bioshock 2. A fantastic game, got high ratings, but everyone I know that played it was like "hmm... it's not as good as Bioshock 1 was". My mind hurts at the thought of that -.-

Both are amazing, and even better in tandem.
Also, Bioshock 2 had better mechanics, being able to use both a weapon and plasmid at the same time.

...I've beaten all Bioshock on multiple platforms numerous times :l
I LOVE BIOSHOCK.

I'm going to use my sculpey for a new project.

I'm going to make Majora's Mask.
Thanks Monja Smile I need more random and more than likely unintentional inspiration~!

Yeah, well I'm used to spending a lot of time on this like that. I usually take about 4-5 hours on my Bioshock vigor bottles, so I'll be ready once I find a good reference :p

I'll probably pull out my tablet for the room drawing, myself... Though I greatly prefer paper and pencil.

And sounds like a plan!
I'll make some biscuits. I make killer biscuits :p

I want the 3ds version~~~! Surprised
That would be awesome.

I'll take all the reference I can get for these works I do.
And time.
And quiet time to focus on sculpting it xD

Bulletproof teacups are essential.
I'll bring the pot, with backup teacups just in case:

I like the taste of coffee, but, I don't drink it, unless it's from like, 7-eleven or a gas station or something, once in a blue moon. As for tea, I love it, now Smile But, I don't drink enough that I'm caffeine dependent. I don't want that xD
